Default How do you view the opposition?

Just curious: How do you view your opponents? Are you just playing a friendly game, or do you see them as obstacles to be crushed in your quest to win?

For me, when I first start out at the lowest ranks in a game, it's purely a quest for the cash and everyone is a mere obstacle. However, as you progress up the ranks and approach the top, they begin to become more of friendly games, not entirely friendly, I still want to win, but I develop a respect for the top players I fighting with in a game.

This is how it was for me as I climbed the ranks in Jungle Bubble on King in 2006 and early 2007. As I got into the 10000+ rank, I think I probably played lulu1616 over 500 times, probably losing a little more than winning, but I guess I came to accept losing to her when it happened, considering she's the back-to-back reigning Royal Cup Champ in the 2006 and 2007 Cups (...there should be a new one soon, might get me playing on King again for a little bit.)

For me, I developed tremendous respect for those top players with whom I played repeatedly against. It was then where it's not so much adversarial, and becomes more friendly.

Yup, I'm pretty much the same as afort. When I'm learning a game and not yet able to cruise through the rankings, everyone becomes my competitor. There's no room for being buddy-buddy with everyone I play with at the low ranks, if I'm playing cash games at a game I don't excel at it's solely for profit.

Now, when I'm playing a game that I'm actually good at, I've got love for everyone. If someone manages to beat me 10 times in a row at Bejeweled, I'm not angry or frustrated...I'd get impressed and PM the dude/dudette letting them know they rock. If there's a progressive going on and I see you guys in the top 20, I'm happy for you all. When you get to a certain level of playing ability, you're not really playing against your opponent -- you're playing against yourself. It's all about being able to reach the maximum potential of a given layout and scoring as high as possible with the skillset that you have.

But if I'm down a few bucks in cash games and I really need to win in order to prevent having to make a cash deposit...(Ivan Drago voice)....I MUST BREAK YOU.
