How do you make videos?

I have enjoyed watching the videoes made by some of you guys, and have often thought of producing some myself. But what software can you recommend. Something free of charge would be preferred, but if there's a really good program that is reasonably priced, then I'd like to know.

I use a pirated version of Camtasia. It's too expensive to buy cause I rarely ever use it. But it's very good at screen recording.
