King's finally coming out with a Tower Defense style game. It was up for testing a few hours this morning. Here's a quick summary of the game play for those who missed it.
The game has a animal/farm theme. Hen's Defense refers to the end the path where there a 3 eggs that you're protecting. These are essentially 3 lives. You get a bonus at the end of the game for each egg left: 1 egg = 500, 2 eggs = 1500, 3 eggs = 3000 total bonus.
There are 4 towers: a basic tower that hits a single enemy, has low damage, low cost, decent fire rate; a secondary tower that hits multiple enemies, decent damage, mid cost, and rapid fire rate; a top tower that hits a single enemy, has high damage, high cost, and decent fire rate. The final tower is a slow down tower which slows the progress of enemies on the path, has low cost and decent fire rate, with no damage.
The path for creeps is variable in all games, so you have to constantly adapt.
The creeps themselves vary as well. There are 3 waves plus a final "boss" in each game. You get about 20-30 seconds before the first wave starts. The creeps in each wave will also vary and have different properties such as slow-weak; slow-strong, fast-moderate, etc. I think there are about 5-6 different creep types. The final boss is worth 1000 points. You also get a time bonus and a money bonus at the end as well.
The other element to the game is the mini-game which must be played before placing every tower. The mini-game determines how large the fire radius of your tower is. It's a simple swap game where you have to match several groups of 3 or more of a specific item. It takes about 4 or 5 groups to end the mini-game. The key here is to play the swap game fast; the tower won't be active until the mini-game is complete. The creeps are moving while you play the game, so the faster you complete the mini-game, the more damage that tower will be able to do. In order to get a larger fire radius, you have to complete about 1-2 more groups than the minimum to end the game. You really have to pay attention to the board so you can get multiple combo's on your last swap and thereby get the larger firing radius.
It's a fairly quick game, I think the timer counts down from 4 minutes. I really enjoyed playing it and the swap game for the firing radius adds another level of skill to the game.
