Default What do you do to change your luck?

Right now, I am mired in the worst skill-gaming slump I could possibly imagine, mainly as a result of my inability to beat two specific players. I'm starting to wonder why I'm even in the same division as these two players -- they should probably be in a division of their own. Over the last 2-3 weeks, my balance on WW is down by over $1500. Of all the premium tournaments I've played (and with the new tournament structures, I can't see how you'd ever get ahead playing non-premiums), one of these two players has taken first place in probably 85% of them.

When you're in situations like that, what do you do to change your luck? I'm considering the possibility that my period of profitability is simply over.

Well there goes another $100.

Congratulations to Johan and his eidetic memory. I think WW has run its course for me, aside from dailies, survivals, and perhaps the occasional special.

hey ezorn. I've had disgusting WOF premium runs - probably 3 or 4 - in that range... where I've dropped $500 to $1000+ in the span of a couple days mostly playing WOF premiums... and let me tell you you've taken a good chunk of my money in those too... what comes around goes around. Nowadays, most of the time I have the discipline to avoid playing them and still making a decent profit, but every few months I seem to have an error of judgment and enter the premiums again.

Interesting. Do you still feel like you can make good money in the other tournaments with how watered down the prizes are?

Well, I'm going to do OK in this week's mega tourney, but I continue to be almost completely unable to beat these two players. I just had a premium tourney in which I played the first entry and was very confident with my score -- and one of these two came in and beat it by almost 1000 points! I played a few more entries in the tournament and none of them had anywhere near enough points available to beat even my first entry, let alone his ridiculous score.

The other weird pattern with one of these two players is that when I enter a tournament he's already entered, he often seems to have played a second entry -- and then after playing a couple of entries myself and seeing what the scores are like, it makes no sense that he wouldn't have been happy with his first score. For example, just now I entered a tourney and his scores were 14,850 and 14,700. I botched my first entry, but my second entry I played perfectly and got as many points as were possible with that board and sequence of spins, for a score of 14,575. I played a couple more entries and confirmed for myself that the tourney maxed out around 14,600. So after this guy played his 14,700, I'm sure he would have known that he played it just about perfectly. So why would he play another entry? As someone who has won three WOF survival tournaments, I find it pretty incredible that there's a player out there who can not only beat me just about EVERY time, but can often have TWO entries in a tournament that are higher than what I can muster -- and would play a second entry after "playing so well" in the first one.

I honestly don't know what the heck is going on, but I've played thousands upon thousands of games of WOF, and I remain extremely skeptical of this player in particular. (It doesn't help that he was in the lower end of the first tier for the first several months of WOF's presence on WW before quite suddenly flipping a switch and becoming the dominant WOF premium player.)

WoF is an extremely frustrating game for me, I don't like the fact that I feel out of control of it (trying to solve the puzzle before hand, GUESSING letters). At your level though, I guess those trivial things don't bother you anymore and you've got the method down pat. Have you reported the users for possible cheats just to see?

Going down 1500$ seems crazy to me, my WW balance has generally never passed $600 until I finally got to the point where I could compete in the Big Money premiums. Then I got up to $800, only to let myself go on a series of ups and downs that dipped below $100 again - I'm now back up to $500+ but I can FULLY understand the frustration of playing premiums and just funneling away several hundred dollars and not make it anywhere.

I suppose implementing self control in these situations is one way, but I can hardly do that myself - plus that just helps you NOT lose money - not MAKE money.

The only thing that helps me is trying to be good in a lot of games. I think that's the only way to make sure you never entirely burn out. I've got at least 7 games that I can compete in division 1 with, even though some are just barely. But as far as making huge money in other areas, I guess you'd have to be able to compete in other premiums as well, which I'd imagine is pretty tough to pull off.

It's not big money, but I try to stay in as many ladders as I can (currently 6) and have a constant stream of rewards points coming in every night + playing all the super rewards. And hopefully be able to reach that 47K mark and get $100 every week.
