    Default King.com Newbie Ranking Questions

I thought I'd put this here because only newbies can be this confused. Would someone tell me what are the rankings and what do they mean and is there someplace to go on the site to find out? I am ranked in three games, I am a Damsel and a Lady. I have no idea why I am one or the other or what that means or how it works.

    Thanks!

Maybe I should say hello. I am a 60-ish woman from New England, U.S. who plays online poker and just found out you can play other stuff for $.

    I'm slow.

    But determined!

They have a ranking system to match you with players of your level. You have a different rank in each game, and you always start at 2000. Winning will increase your ranking, losing will lower it. Winning a big jackpot against lots of players will affect your ranking a lot more than winning a small 1v1 game.

The players are divided into brackets (or levels) according to their ranking, and you generally don't play outside of your bracket except in Royal Cups. The brackets are different for each game, but broadly speaking the following applies:

    Level 1: 1500-3000
    Level 2: 3000-4000
    Level 3: 4000-6000
    Level 4: 6000-8000
    Level 5: 8000-12000 (sometimes there's a split at 10000 as well)
    Level 6: 12000+

These brackets kind of correspond to the different titles you're given (like Lady and Damsel) but there are more titles than there are brackets. What bracket (or level) you're in also determines the tournaments that are available to you. A lot of games don't have a progressive jackpot at the highest level.

    I hope that explains it

Thanks, Kworb. So, if I am playing for $ and new, the better strategy is playing a lot of Heads-up games to keep my rating lower so I find softer competition?

the best way to make money is to practice first on free games (which don't change your rank), then play the most expensive progressives you can while your rank is low -- don't waste your low rank on 2-player tourneys where you can't win as much!

Thanks, I am doing that mostly now because I was getting my butt kicked HU - my problem is, I'm not sure how good you have to be to take on competition at the various games. I do know playing after the Europeans go the bed is +EV, they seem to have been around a long time and are very good.

So, is a progressive a Cup tournament? A 64 player single buy-in elimination? I've played those in the only game I'm good at. So far I'm ahead, but half the time the program messes up and I'm not getting paid at the levels I win what they show I should be getting. So, maybe I just don't understand it....

    anyway- thanks for the info

Progressives are the "jackpot" tournaments (in between cup tournaments and head to head tournaments on the game page). The prize pool increases as more people enter, and the top 1/3 win. At the lowest level most games have a jackpot tournament. They're a relatively safe way to at least break even, and also give you a good idea of what people are generally scoring.

Oh! (duh) Yes, you are right. In fact, I won the first one I entered. Good place to focus my energy, then. Thanks!

Another tip is that if you managed to get the top spot in a progressive, when that finishes your rank will shoot up and you will play tougher opponents from then on. Before that happens, get in all the other progressives at that low rank, and as many others as you can for that game.

Basically if are able to get 1st or near to it in a progressive, then you should make a decent profit in that game until your rank gets too high.

As Kworb said, progressives will give you a very good estimate to go on scorewise.
