I would argue that it's more important not to worry about speed first. I'd say, spend a few practice games completely ignoring your score, and just try to make as many hyper cubes as possible. Doing this will greatly help you see hyper setups 3, 4+ moves in advance as you get better and faster
Even if you just have:
__^
^^______
Try and set that up to
__^
^^_^^
And other such set-ups. It probably won't get you a lot of points, but it'll help you train your versatility. While practicing, since you're not worrying about score so much-- If you DO have a hyper, look to see if that using that hyper could set things up for another hyper.
I'd say doing things like this are important first, and then once you have that down-- ease up on the hypers and try to play quickly, incorporating what you learned where practical (I.E. where you won't spend 20 seconds chasing one hyper-set up. The practice should teach you what kind of things can be set up from what quickly, and what kind of things you shouldn't waste your time on, as well as training your eyes to notice hyper setups quickly, 3-4 moves in advance)
I probably don't average as high as Ikaruga does in Bejeweled, but that's because he plays it a lot more than I do. When I actively played after intense hyper-setup training, I would be averaging 7000-9000 per game, getting 5+ hypers on just about any layout I was given. But even still, it's a useless skill until you can move fast through the levels.
